FAQS about Interlock Paving
Interlocking pavers are individual slabs of concrete or cement. When fitted together, they form a pavement system that mimics the appearance of tile or cobblestone.
The installation timeframe of interlocking pavers ultimately depends on the size and complexity of the project. A short pathway or driveway may only take a few days to install, while a longer driveway or large pool deck may take more than a full week to complete.
Interlocking pavers and concrete both have their pros and cons as a paving method. Some of the advantages of pavers include durability, ease of repairs, and colour options.
One of the greatest benefits of interlocking pavers is their durability. While asphalt driveways last roughly 15–20 years on average, a well-paved, properly maintained interlocking system should last up to 30 years or longer by comparison.
While 2” pavers will suffice for most foot traffic, light vehicle traffic typically requires a minimum paver thickness of 2-3/8”. Depending on the application, however, your paving company in Simcoe County may recommend pavers that are 3” thick.
While power-washing might seem like the best method to clean your interlocking pavers, it can actually have the opposite effect. Excessive water pressure or improper technique can cause steaks or permanent damage.
Because different base materials are used for different applications, there is no clear best option for all scenarios. However, the most common base materials used for interlock work include sand, stone dust, crushed stone, and recycled aggregate.
While the required depth will ultimately depend on the condition of your soil, four to six inches of base materials—or a total depth of seven to nine inches—typically suffices for a pedestrian surface. A surface that must support the weight of heavier traffic will require an even greater depth.
